Getting started You can use any of the Garritan libraries on their own, for live play with a MIDI keyboard or other MIDI controller, or as a plug-in with a notation program or DAW. All of the Garritan libraries are accessed through the ARIA Player and can be used interchangeably with each other. The first step to bringing your music to life with the Garritan sounds is to learn to use the ARIA Player. This will give you control over basic functions such as mixing and panning, as well as instrument-specific performance techniques such as bowings, articulations, vibrato, special effects and much more.

The will guide you through the basics of the ARIA interface and controls. For more information about each library and the instrument-specific controls, refer to the library-specific guides. You will find all of these manuals in the library installation folder on your computer.

Hi everyone After some initial headaches I have GPO running perfectly on my iMac (intel) in Logic Pro 8. I can load instruments and use them, I can use multiple audio outputs within the Kontakt Player to send each instrument to a different AUX channel in Logic and I can also load the instruments in Kontakt2. Some initial questions for you.

1) what sort of Mac do you have, intel or PPC? 2) which version of GPO did you purchase, is it the one that came with the original Kontakt Player (light grey dedicated interface) or the later one that ships with Kontakt Player 2 (black interface, looks almost identical to Kontakt2). This has an important bearing on how you install and authorise the software. I can try to help those with problems, because I made meticulous notes recently while reinstalling my iMac with Leopard. The 2.2.3 update is it. The problem with this update is that it updates the Kontakt Player plug-in to the same engine as Kontakt2, and redefined it's manner of operation. Why a problem?

Installation is not simple. You must have the original version installed, including the library before installing the update.otherwise the library won't get installed. But, once installed, the library files (3 I believe) must be moved to the new install's folder. Luckily the updating tutorials make it pretty clear and easy to do. Fleabag great, man! I have a macbookpro 2.4 Ghz (so, intel) and the version of GPO is the one that came with the original kontakt player.

(light gray). The following instructions are ones I have written from experience gained from multiple attempts at installing Garritan Personal Orchestra (GPO).

They relate to installing the original Power-PC (PPC) version of GPO version 1 (which used the light grey Kontakt Player interface) from the 4 supplied CDs (or single DVD) onto an Intel Mac, then updating to the latest Universal Binary version of GPO version 2 (which uses the black Kontakt Player 2 interface). You have to install both products, there is NO workaround which lets you install just version 2! Where I use the word 'ticked' you may understand this better as 'checked' according to your nationality. What I mean is putting a tick or cross in a little square box in a dialog to select an option I'm English you see.

Where I use the word 'authorised' I might mean 'activated'. NI's terminology has changed over the years! What you will need in advance of installing GPO version 1: i) An account on the Native Instruments web site, to allow you to authorise GPO. Ii) The serial number for your original copy of GPO version 1, which came in the box. What you will NOT need for installing GPO version 1 You will not need the 1.1.8.3 update to GPO because GPO version 2 supercedes this. Installing GPO version 1 1) Install GPO from CD1 of the original CD set.

You can probably go for the default simple installation options here, because that way you get the whole product installed including the library structure. Personally I use the 'Custom Install' option, ticking all the option boxes except for the plugin options (VST, AU, RTAS etc) because I will never be running this PPC version of GPO inside a DAW on my intel Mac. IF the installer asks you for your serial number, then the one you need to enter is the original one which was supplied with GPO. It may not ask you at this stage, it might be something you enter in the Service Centre later.

My notes are a bit hazy on this point! IF the installer asks you to enter a location in which to install the library, then bear in mind that whatever name you give it, the installer will automatically create a folder BELOW that one called 'GPO Library'. (You may not care about this, but I normally have my library on an external USB2 HFS+ drive under a folder in which I keep all my Kontakt-based sample libraries, so it helps me organise things if I know in advance that its going to create that extra folder.) It is a while since I installed the actual library because I keep it on that external disk, but I think there are 3 main data files you have to drag and drop from the CDs (or DVD) to the final chosen library location (the 'GPO Library' folder) after the installer completes. Or maybe the installer does this for you? Its been a couple of years so I can't remember.

These files are the 3 big ones with the actual instrument samples in: GPOLibrarypart1.nks GPOLibrarypart2.nks GPOLibrarypart3.nks 2) You need to authorise this installation of GPO version 1 with Native Instruments. You cannot later run GPO version 2 unless this first version is properly authorised.

To do this, DO NOT RUN the 'Registration Tool' which was installed as part of GPO, it is obsolete. Instead you must download and install the NI 'Service Centre' program from the NI web site. Once you have installed Service Centre, run it. It will probably immediately detect that there is a later version of Service Centre available online, so follow its prompts to have the Service Centre automatically install the update and restart itself. I cannot remember if you have to log into the Service Centre (using your NI account name and password) before or after it updates itself.

But you have to log in at some point. Once Service Centre is properly running, use the option in Service Centre to authorise GPO if it doesn't automatically take you straight into doing so. Hopefully this will authorise OK. 3) If you want, test that GPO version 1 is authorised and runs OK. It is a PPC program on an Intel machine, so will run under Rosetta and be pretty slow, but its good enough to make sure it works. Run the stand-alone application, I.think. its in the 'Garritan Personal Orchestra' folder under the Applications folder.

It should start up in full authorised mode, not reporting it is a time-limited demo! What you will need in advance of installing GPO version 2: i) Your account on the Native Instruments web site. Ii) The latest version of GPO version 2 downloaded from the Native Instruments web site, when I did this it was 2.2.3 but 2.2.4 is now available. I find it easier to download these updates directly from the web site rather than using the Service Centre program (the Service Centre never seems to recognise which updates I have downloaded and which I have not). You have to log into the NI web site, then follow the 'Updates' link to get to your 'Personal Update Manager' page.

Finally press the 'send' button to get a list of updates available to you. IMPORTANT NOTE: You will not even be able to view the available updates for GPO on the NI web site UNTIL you have successfully authorised GPO version 1!!!! They remain invisible on your NI 'Personal Update Manager' page until the basic product is authorised. Iii) The serial number for your downloaded copy of GPO version 2, you get this from your 'Personal Update Manager' page on the Native Instruments web site (I think you click the 'What's This?'

What you will NOT need for installing GPO version 2 You will not need to download all of the version 2 updates, just the latest one (2.2.4 at the time of writing this). Run the GPO 2.2.4 installer that you downloaded. It will ask for your system password before proceeding (note that this is NOT your old or new GPO serial number!). I would STRONGLY recommend that you accept the default install location that the installer suggests to you. I tried changing it in the past, to keep all my NI instruments together in one folder, and it caused a nightmare and nothing ran properly.

Obviously something NI did not test very well. I then select the 'Custom Install' option, I tick all the boxes apart from RTAS because I don't run ProTools.

The installer will ask for your name and GPO serial number. This is the NEW GPO serial number that you downloaded from the Native Instruments web site, NOT the old one that came in the box. The installer may prompt you to select the required library location (my notes don't indicate if this always happens or whether it can work out where the old GPO installation library was kept).

If it does prompt you, enter the SAME location that YOU typed for GPO version 1 and do NOT add that 'GPO Library' bit on the end. The new installer will install the GPO version 2 library to a new folder called 'GPO KP2 Library' below the location that you typed.

So now you have two library folders side by side, one for GPO version 1 and one for GPO version 2. Once the installer has installed GPO version 2, it will ask if you want to install Service Centre. Don't bother installing this, as you have already installed it earlier for authorising GPO version 1. Run the Service Centre again. It should automatically take you through authorising the new GPO AND the GPO K2 Player (don't ask me why there are two separate items in that list, it beats me.). When I look at the 'Product Overview' page in the Service Centre it shows that I now have 3 products installed: GPO (the original one) authorised, GPO KP2 authorised, Kontakt Player 2 authorised (with no serial number).

5) The new 'GPO KP2 Library' folder contains lots of files which define the structure of the library, but the 3 main data files which contain the actual samples WILL BE MISSING. These are the same ones that you originally installed from the CDs (or DVD) into the 'GPO Library' folder. GPOLibrarypart1.nks GPOLibrarypart2.nks GPOLibrarypart3.nks So what you need to do now is EITHER move OR copy those 3 big files from the 'GPO Library' folder to the 'GPO KP2 Library' folder. I actually moved them because they take up lots of disk space and I'm never going to use GPO version 1 ever again, I only have it installed because you have to have it installed to be able to install, authorise and run GPO version 2.

In fact I totaly deleted the 'GPO Library' folder from my machine once I had got GPO version 2 installed and working 6) Check that the new GPO version 2 stand-alone player works properly, is authorised and does not declare itself to be a time-limited demo. You will find that the GPO version 2 stand-alone player is NOT in the 'Garritan Personal Orchestra' folder. It is in another folder, possibly called 'Kontakt Player 2', and the application is called something like 'Kontakt Player 2' (I'm not in my studio to check the precise details). I.think.

that the way things are organised, you could have a whole bunch of Kontakt Player 2-based instruments but there is only ever one Kontakt Player 2 application, and it is capable of loading all authorised libraries. Once the Kontakt Player 2 application is running, it should be a black rectangular window very much like Kontakt2 in design.

The GPO library shows up as an egg yolk yellow coloured box at the left of the interface, with drop-down lists for Instruments and Multis. Simply select an instrument from the Instruments list to add it to the multi on the right of the interface. Alternatively load a multi from the Multis list and select whether this new multi should replace the one you already have on the right or be merged with it. Probably easier to play with than to explain.

The Kontakt Player 2 interface is WAY more powerful than the old grey Kontakt Player one, there is so much you can do with it. Or you can load the GPO instruments and multis in Kontakt2 if you have that sampler, in which case you can do even more. I sincerely hope these instructions are correct and get you up and running.

But yes, that was one of the sources of info from which i built up my 'experience' of re-installs a while ago. (I made the bad move of deleting my hardware registration on the NI website when I reinstalled my Mac a while ago, thinking I needed to do that due to the reinstall of the operating system, and it took weeks of installs, uninstalls, posts on the NI forum and emails to and from NI support to finally get the Service Centre to accept my hardware and serial numbers and let me run GPO!!!) BUT, my new macbook has the trouble of LogiPro8 not recognizing the Kontakt Player 2 AU at all. The stand-alone player works fine, but not the AU in Logic. I've tried updating the timestamp on the AU component, as well as clearing the AudioUnit cache, but neither has helped at all. I'm running Kontakt Player2 Version 2.2.4, and everything is registered, yadda yadda yadda.

Kontakt player 2 works perfectly for me now in logic 8. I have a couple routing issues with where i saved my library (i stupidly moved it from its original location), but that's easily bypassable by selecting 'load' in the kontakt player main menu. (if you know of a setting that could give me a new default, though.i'd be grateful). Also, i didn't get the serial # for KP2, so i'm waiting on NI to get back to me so i can use this NOT in demo mode. Bottom line: it's still working PERFECTLY on my L8 rig and i have YOU to thank. I just have ONE little question that's GPO-specific. HOW DO I CHANGE PANNING on an instrument?

I'm working on a piece with bowed contrabass and i want it to be dead-on in the middle like an electric bass. I keep looking for the place in KP2 that will allow me to do this to no avail! Any help is appreciated!
