Ok so before we proceed into the more advanced services like Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) I think its best that we do a post on FreeNAS. FreeNAS is a stripped-down version of FreeBSD it supports sharing across Windows, Mac and Linux. The latest version of FreeNas 8 includes ZFS which supports high storage capacities and integrates file systems and volume management into a single piece of software. The main reason we are going to use FreeNAS is because of its support for iSCSI shared storage which we require for Failover and clustering. If you are using it for production environment it is highly recommended that you do not use any of the beta versions and only install the latest stable releases. Download FreeNAS from Ok so let’s begin the creation of the VM. Launch VMware Workstation 9.
Click on Create a New Virtual Machine. Click on Custom (advanced) on New Virtual Machine Wizard. 3. Click Next on Virtual Machine Hardware compatibility. Select Installer disc image file (iso) and browse to the location where you have saved the FreeNAS iso.
Select other and Select FreeBSD 64-bit. Enter a name for the VM and browse to the location you want to save the VM.
FreeNAS is very low on resource utilization, please visit too get the recommended System requirements. We are going to leave it at 1 processor and 1 core.
Recommended Memory is 512MB, we are going to keep it at 1 GB. Select your Network Connection method. I Bridged networking for all my VM. Bridged networking for all my VM.

Minimum requirement is 2GB. 14. Click Next. Or change the location of the vmdk file.

15. Review the configuration and click Finish. Click on 'Power on this virtual machine.' 17. Press 1 to install Boot FreeNAS. If you don’t press anything and it will automatically boot to Option 1. 18. Select 1 to Install / Upgrade. Select the Hard Disk Drive on which you want to install FreeNAS. Press Enter, to agree to proceed with the installation.
21. Press Ok to reboot. It only takes about 2 mins to finish the installation. Once rebooted you will see a screen similar to this. Note down the IP Address. Open your favorite browser and enter the IP address you saw on FreeNAS. 24. The first thing you have to do is change the admin password.
To do this; simply click on account. Go to Change Password Tab, and enter the new password. Click on Change Admin Password. Next thing we need to do is setup a Static IP instead of the dynamically assigned IP.
To do this, Click on Network Tab on Top. Change the hostname and domain if required. Even though we have a domain we won’t be using active directory authentication here.
27. Go to Interfaces tab, click Add Interface. Enter the correct IP address and subnet mask relevant to your network.

29. Once you have setup the IP address you will have to change the IP on the address bar of your browser to connect to the FreeNAS again. 30. Once that is done, we will shut down the FreeNAS server to add new hard drives for using it as iSCSI. 31. We will now edit the Virtual Machine, and Click Add. 32. Select Hard Disk.

33. Select create a disk. Disk ' src='alt=' width='439' height='385' / 34. Leave Default options, Click Next. 35. Assign the space required, we are going to create two hard disks of 50 GB each. 36. Click Next to continue or change the location where the vmdk file is saved.
37. Similarly create another hard disk of 50 GB, Click Ok when done. 38. Power on the VM, and open the Webpage in the Browser. Now we have to configure ISCSI on FreeNAS. To do this, go to Services tab.
39. Click on the config icon next to iSCSI 40. Scroll down; Tick the checkbox next to Enable LUC. Then change the controller IP address and authorized network. And select Auth Method to None, Please note that in a production environment it is recommend having some form of authentication for iSCSI targets. 41. Next go to “Portals” tab. Click Add Portal. Enter a comment relevant to the device. Then select the IP address and leave the default port.
Next go to “Initiators” tab, Click Add Initiator. Leave the defaults, Click Ok. 45. Next thing we need to do is attach the hard drives to iSCSI. To do this go to Device Extents, click Add Device Extent. 46. Enter Extent Name, Comment and select the volume you would like to add. For Quorum Disk we only need about 1GB space so for this we will use File Extents to have a smaller size of iSCSI drive on the second hard drive. To do this first go to, Storage and use the volume manager to add the second 50 GB volume.
Go back into iSCSI, Select File Extents tab and select Add File Extent. 49. Enter an extent name, Browse and select the volume you created. Enter the size of the disk. Click Ok to create the extent. Next step is to add Targets for the Extents we have created.

Go to Targets tab and click on Add Target. Enter a Target name & alias; select portal Group ID & initiator group ID. Do the same for the any other extents you've created. 53. Once we have done that we now have to assign the targets to the extents. To do this go to Associated Targets tab and select Add Extent to Target. Assign the Target “quorum” to the extent “Quorum” 55. Similarly attach the target “datastore” to extent “Volume1”.
We have now finished configuring the FreeNAS Server with iSCSI. ISCSI Configuration is now complete, We now have to start the iSCSI Service, to do this, go to Services tab and click on the the toggle switch next to iSCSI to turn on the service.
57. To verify that your setup of iSCSI is working, go into server manager on Windows Server 2012 and launch iSCSI Initiator from tools menu. Click on Yes, to start iSCSI services automatically. On the iSCSI Initiator Properties, Targets Tab, enter the IP address of the FreeNAS Server ( 192.168.1.100), Click on Quick Connect. 60. If you have followed everything correctly so far you will see the 2 targets in the window. You can now connect to them and then format it from Disk Management and start using it That’s it for this post we will continue with Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) next week.
